Funny you mention that it's the _correct_ response.
Personally I love coming back with any response to a cliche - preferrably one which neuters it or changes its meaning, and usually just to see how the other person reacts. Eg "Opposites attract." Yes but "Birds of a feather flock together"... and "Time heals all wounds" ... "And creates more like arthritis"... And my favourite: "It's the thought that counts" yes but "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
